The Crossrunner is an old bike made new, not simply based on the respected, nine-year-old VFR800 VTEC sports tourer, but almost identical save for some new body parts.
The engine is exactly the same as the VFR800's, as are the frame and suspension, the wiring and the brakes. The handlebars, however, are new and combined with the redesigned bodywork they either make the Crossrunner look sleek and modern or a bit like a penguin, depending on your view.
The taller look is achieved by adjusting the rear suspension to increase the downward angle of the swingarm and by dropping the forks through the yokes by 40mm. The components are the same.
The motor might be identical, but the power characteristics have been changed, with a useful boost in torque between 3,000rpm and 6,000rpm, helped by a new exhaust system. The downside is the loss of some high-rev horsepower, which now peaks at 101bhp.
It's amazing then that you'd hardly guess there's a VFR800 VTEC powering the Crossrunner; not only does the bike look different, it feels different. The engine is stronger at lower rpm and the sudden power step that kicks in on the VFR as the VTEC cariable valve timing switches over has been smoothed out. The result is plenty of mid-range punch. It also sounds fabulous.
